ARTIST STATEMENT

I'm Xenia Raw, an interdisciplinary artist working at the intersection of contemporary art and theater. My series of works serve as the scenery for a play without actors. The audience is invited to witness a glitch in the system and delving into the core theme of my art — human error.

I work with reflective fabric. Its surface mirrors light rays in an unconventional manner for our eyes, almost as if it defies the laws of physics. Depending on the viewer's position relative to the artwork, certain fragments of the image vanish while others emerge. It gives the impression of a glitch in reality perception. [video]

I integrate such pieces among more traditional paintings or textile works. By merging various mediums, like embroidering over oil paintings or connecting canvases with threads, I collide opposing notions such as inviolability and tactility, society and individuality, masculine and feminine. This cultivates my personal language, one that evolves alongside the viewer from series to series.

Human error, for me, stands in opposition to any meticulously structured systems. Being a perfectionist, I have a deep-seated fear of making mistakes, yet I continually challenge myself to explore the realm of errors.

The right to make mistakes is the right to experiment and gain access to the new.
